Greta Garbo was an actress that starred in many movies in her time. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden on September 18, 1905. She was the youngest of her siblings. Her parents were not wealthy and struggled financially. Unfortunately, her father got ill and died when she was only 14 years old. She left school and worked in a department store as a saleswoman. While she was working for the department store, she appeared in two advertising short. This led to her first comedy film, Peter the Tramp in 1922 (Harriet Brown & Company, 2013). Later that year, she applied and won a scholarship to the Academy to the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Garbo left the school to star in the lead role of the movie, Gosta Berlings Saga (Harriet Brown & Company, 2013). She was then in the film, Joyless Street in 1925 (Denny Jackson, Unknown). The president of MGM gave Greta Garbo a contract after starring, Gosta Berling Saga. She moved to California after that. The Torrent was her first American movie. After The Torrent, Temptress, and Flesh and Devil, she was an international star. MGM wanted to extend their contract with Greta Garbo because she was doing so well. For the next two years she made seven more films. She inspired many women in her time because she was so different and didn't really care about what people said. Anne Christie was Greta Garbo’s first talkie. The movie was released in 1930. Anna Christie proved that Greta Garbo had what to takes to successful transition from the silent films to real talking movies. Few silent actors and actresses can make such a great transition. She made thirteen more films including Camille in 1937 and Ninotchka in 1939 (Harriet Brown & Company, 2013). Camille and Ninotchka were one of Greta Garbo’s best films and received a special Oscar. Durning War World II, Greta Garbo didn't make anymore films. She took a break and stopped completely after the War ended. Greta Garbo moved to New York and stayed there. She died in the year of 1990 at the age of 85. She was a wonderful individual woman that inspired many people. She changed the movie business and the fashion world.
